AskJAM: What is the Statement of Purpose and why is it important?

In simple terms, a Statement of Purpose (SOP) is an essay that elaborates on your motivation to apply to a certain course at a university. It should reflect your personality!

The document should focus on who you are as a person, what inspires you, and why.

It should also mention what your goals and aims are, who you’re ready to be, and lastly, how the particular course and university that you’re opting for will help you with the same.

SOPs, are often referred to as personal statements. It is a crucial piece of a university application that tells the admissions committee about you: who you are, what your academic and professional interests are, and how you may add value to the university program you're applying to!

To write an impressive SOP you must discuss your long-term and short-term goals and connect it with your idea of pursuing the course you are applying to.

You can then present your understanding of the chosen field and mention how you want to contribute to that arena.

Summarise your previous achievements and experiences, your influences, and how they have shaped your thinking and your goals for the future.

What an SOP is not

It is not your life story from childhood to school, and family. All this can be summarised in brief. The SOP is not your CV. So it must only briefly cover the important highlights from your CV.
