Apostille: Student Visa Requirement

Updated: Oct 28, 2023

For a student visa, residency visa, or professional reason, the Apostille stamp is required. It establishes that you are a reliable individual visiting a foreign country and shows that your certificate is accurate or authentic.

Apostille is a certification process that verifies the authenticity of documents for use in foreign countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention. Italy, Hungary, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Spain, and Portugal are some of the signatories to the Hague Apostille Convention. If you are an Indian student planning to study in one of these countries, you need to apostille certain documents, such as visa applications or enrollment in educational institutions. There is no requirement for the approval of a foreign ambassador or any other legalization. So, if you want to apply for a student or dependent visa, you would need to acquire an Apostille on your documents.

Duration and cost: The apostille process generally takes from 5 days. However, the entire process usually takes up to a month.

  • Apostille#: Charges/fees ₹ 5,00* per document

  • Verified Apostille: Charges/fees ₹ 1,200* per document

  • Apostille + HRD : Charges/fees ₹ 6,500 per educational document

  • Apostille + HD: Charges/fees ₹ 5,500 per non-educational document

Identify the documents and get notarized copies: Determine which documents you need to apostille. The specific requirements can vary, so check with the relevant authorities or institutions in your destination country for exact details. As a student, you would first need to get your mark sheets and degree authenticated by the education department. Then it needs to be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs, in Delhi. The legitimacy is checked for several documents educational certificates, such as birth certificates, educational certificates, degrees, transcripts, diplomas, HSC, SSC, marksheets, and school reports. These are legal proof of your qualifications and are required to get a student visa.

  1. Attestation by HRD: The Human Resource Development (HRD) Department of your state government first approves the necessary documents. Authentication by the respective State HRD is done.

  2. Attestation by MEA: In India, you typically need to get your documents attested by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

You'll likely need to pay a fee for each document you want to be apostilled. Additionally, you may need to fill out application forms, which can usually be obtained from the authority responsible for apostilles.

You can pick up your apostilled documents at the appropriate authority once they have been completed. Keep in mind that these documents are crucial for your foreign endeavors, so be sure to keep them safe. Depending on the country, you might also need to receive certified translations of your documents into the official language of the destination nation.

Note: The Apostille process can only be completed when your degrees or transcripts are all available. Provisional transcripts may not be accepted.
