Visa: APS for Indian Students who want to study in Germany

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) procedure is a mandatory process for international students who wish to study in Germany. It primarily applies to students from countries with a high incidence of document fraud, particularly in academic certificates and degrees. The APS procedure is designed to verify the authenticity of your educational qualifications.

Note: apostille is not notarization

The APS India gives the APS certificate, which attests to the fact that your documents are legitimate and authentic and, as a result, that you are qualified to study in Germany. Simply said, if your application for the APS certificate is approved, you will obtain the certificate with which you can submit an application for a German student visa through the VFS and for German universities. It is important to note that the APS certificate is good for an indefinite amount of time.

Duration and Cost: The costs associated with the APS procedure may include application fees, document verification fees, and interview fees, if applicable. The fees can also vary depending on your location and the specific requirements of the APS office. The APS certificate is not free: the processing fee for the APS equals 18.000 INR. Indian students have to transfer this amount to the APS bank account. To process your APS application, the APS India will need around 3-4 weeks. Generally, the APS office starts processing your application as soon as it receives your payment. On average, you can expect the process to take anywhere from 2 to 6 months.

According to APS India, the TestAS will be obligatory for the relevant students from January 1, 2023.

Here are the steps involved in the APS procedure for Germany:

1. Verify Eligibility: First, determine if you are required to go through the APS procedure. APS is typically required for students from countries like China, Vietnam, India, and some others. It is recommended to check with the German embassy or consulate in your home country.

2. Gather Documents: Compile all the paperwork required for the APS process. These usually consist of your high school diploma, transcripts, and, if appropriate, any higher education certifications. Ensure that these documents have been authenticated and notarized correctly.

3. Application: Contact the local APS office or the German embassy/consulate in your country to initiate the APS process. You may need to submit an application form and pay a fee.

4. Document Verification: The APS office will verify the authenticity of your documents. This may involve comparing them with records from your home country's education authorities and contacting your previous educational institutions. If your documents are found to be genuine and you meet the other requirements, you will receive an APS certificate. This certificate is essential for your visa application and university admission.

5. Interview: You may be required to attend an interview at the APS office. During the interview, you might be asked about your educational background, motivations for studying in Germany, and future plans.

6. Visa Application: With your APS certificate in hand, you can apply for a German student visa at the nearest German embassy or consulate in your home country. The APS certificate is a crucial part of your visa application.

8. University Application: You should also submit an application for admission to the German universities you are interested in while you wait for the APS procedure to be finished. Check each university's individual admission requirements and application deadlines.

You can travel to Germany after receiving your student visa. Make sure to reach Germany well in advance of the registration cutoff dates set by your university.

It's crucial to keep in mind that the APS process can take several months to complete, therefore it's recommended to begin the process well before the start of your intended studies. It's important to get in touch with the necessary authorities for the most recent information and guidance because the precise rules and procedures may differ depending on your home country and the particular APS office you're dealing with.
