Studying in Germany for a Master's is it important to give the dMAT?

Is the dMAT compulsory?

Students who are seeking admission from the Winter 2027(Sept-October) in Master's programmes may have to sit for an additional exam - the Digital Master Test (dMAT).

It is further clarified that the dMAT applies only to students whose Bachelor's degree in India is in the following fields:

Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance & Economics, Business & Management.

Even if your degree is in interdisciplinary areas like: Business Analytics, Engineering Management, Industrial Engineering, Financial Technology (FinTech), Data Science, you need to give the dMAT.

Who does not need the dMAT score?

Students who are applying for a Bachelor.

Any one who will be admitted to and begin studies by Winter 2026 or Spring 2027.

PhD Students.

If your degree does not fall under the subjects mentioned in the list.

What is the dMAT?

The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardized aptitude test It is conducted by g.a.s.t. (TestDaF Institute, Bochum, Germany)

The dMAT is NOT a memory test. Instead, it measures your ability to: Logical reasoning, Analytical thinking, Problem-solving, Applying knowledge to real situations. These are the skills German universities value the most.

Do I need to go through the APS procedure in addition to the dMAT?

APS India will continue to verify your academic documents. You may receive the APS verification only after getting your dMAT score. You also have to pay the APS fee, which is INR 18000.

Seats are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is strongly recommended.

A good dMAT score cannot compensate for a degree from an institution that is not recognised on anabin.

How is the Test Structured?

The dMAT has two sections. Language: English

Module 1 – Core Module: Critical thinking, Logical reasoning, Analytical ability, Problem-solving skills

Module 2 – General Academic Module: You'll be given academic situations and asked to solve related questions.

The focus is on Understanding information, Applying concepts, Reasoning

Question Type: Single-choice

The complete dMAT currently takes around 3½ hours, including a short break.

Always confirm the latest timings while registering on the official g.a.s.t. portal.

How is the dMAT Scored? 

Your score is reported in two ways. You get a percentile as well as dMAT score

1. Percentile: This tells you how you performed compared to other test-takers.

For example: 70 Percentile = You scored equal to or better than 70% of candidates.

2. dMAT Score A score between: 0 — 200

Average score: 100

Important: The dMAT is NOT a Pass/Fail examination.

A lower score does not automatically result in APS rejection.

APS only requires that your dMAT certificate is submitted along with your application, where applicable.

Individual universities will decide how much importance they give to your score.
