Is the US dream still alive?
As the United States reopens student visa appointments for the Fall 2025 intake, thousands of Indian students are eagerly preparing for their move abroad. While US visa appointments have resumed and the path to American education is reopening, students must navigate a system that demands thorough preparation, awareness, and adaptability. From acing the visa interview to managing their online presence, applicants must stay alert and proactive.
Seeking guidance from reliable counselors, official embassy sources, and university advisors can significantly improve one’s chances of success.
Despite improved availability of appointments, students continue to face a host of challenges, ranging from scheduling issues to complex visa interviews and evolving security scrutiny.

Visa Appointment Hurdles
The demand for US student visas in India remains incredibly high, especially during peak summer months. While the US Embassy and Consulates in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata have added more slots, they often get booked within minutes of release. Students find themselves logging into the appointment portal at odd hours, relying on Telegram or WhatsApp groups for real-time updates, and sometimes even traveling to other cities in hopes of finding an earlier date.
Another concern is the risk of visa refusals under section 214(b), where students are denied a visa if the officer is not convinced of their intent to return to India after studies. Many students struggle to articulate their academic goals, long-term plans, and financial situation during the interview, despite having valid offers and funding.
Social Media Scrutiny
In recent years, the US visa process has also included heightened protocols, including social media screening. Students are now required to disclose usernames used on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn. Inappropriate or politically sensitive posts—no matter how old—could potentially influence the officer’s perception of the applicant.
Students are advised to clean up their digital footprint, ensure their profiles reflect responsible behavior, and avoid controversial public posts, especially in the months leading up to the interview.
The spate of high-profile arrests of foreign students in US universities, must be noted by prospective students going to that country to study. Further, students, even US nationals who are vocal about US’ foreign policy have been severely reprimanded. One MIT student was denied her degree. So we must comply with the prevailing rules and respect the sensitivities of the government.
Students applying to US universities should begin the process well in advance. A strong application includes:
Academic transcripts
Letters of recommendation
Motivation essays or Statement of Purpose (SOP)
Proof of extracurricular involvement
Standardized test scores (if required)
English proficiency tests like the IELTS, TOEFL, and Duolingo English Test are mandatory for most Indian applicants. It is wise to prepare and book these tests early, allowing time for retakes if needed.
Deadlines and Financial Aid
Most US universities offer Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision timelines. Applying early improves chances of admission and access to merit-based scholarships. Students should research the Cost of Attendance and explore scholarships, need-based aid, and assistantship opportunities. Keep in mind that financial aid deadlines may differ.
The dream of studying in the US is within reach—but now, more than ever, it requires smart planning and cautious execution.
