Study in Germany; top Universities, top choice

Updated: Aug 1, 2022

Pooja Biraia tells you why Germany might be a better option for that Master's course you have been planning to do abroad.

For most people aspiring to go abroad for their post-graduation, the US, UK, Canada, or some Asian countries are the most frequented destinations. However, considering other options can be surprisingly valuable. Do consider Germany before making such an important decision. Here are a few reasons that can make a degree from a German University a wise option for students:

Less Expensive The first thing that matters is money! Almost 90% of the German universities are Government-run, resulting in highly subsidised tuition fees, ranging from ` 12,000 to ` 36,000 a semester. It means top-class education at reasonable rates, and an excellent academic graph can fetch you a double bonanza - scholarship.

Limited Scholarships Scholarships are reserved for the meritorious. About 15 to 20% of Indian students in Germany receive funding each year. So, do not lose heart if you are not among those offered a scholarship; the state funding of the tuition fees and the opportunities to work there can make up for it.

Student speaks: Reeth Sachdev, a biotechnology student studying at Germany's Aachen University, says, "I am very happy studying in Aachen. The university is well known for the sciences, and my reason for choosing Germany was that the expense was a lot lesser compared to the US. I got an amazing tuition waiver, and as I work here for two to three hours each day, meeting daily expenses becomes easier. Though studies can be quite demanding and tough, the professors are all friendly and helpful".

Attention Engineers Germany is considered the top-ranking education hub worldwide. Sonam Moondhra, International Education consultant, says, "Germany is very well known for programmes in engineering, sciences and business and also for its research facilities."

Self-funding You can work off-campus for four hours every day during an ongoing academic year. This is not allowed in many western countries that allow students to work only during summer breaks or vacations.

Jobs and internships The impact of the recession is not seen so much in Germany. The economy has survived and is doing well, so you would not face many difficulties when looking for internships and jobs if you are proactive in finding the right place for yourself. All you have to do is look for a job pertaining to your particular field of study and work there for one year after the completion of your course.

Get to learn a foreign language. Yes, you need to learn the language as German is widely spoken and comes in handy for your daily conversations with the locals there. But then again, learning the language is not rocket science, and you need not be a professional A-level pass to be admitted. Enrollment into a German learning course in India would suffice when you apply to a German University for admission.

Medium of Instruction As programmes there are taught in German as well as in English, you would need to look specifically for courses where the medium of instruction is wholly or partly in English. Do thorough research before you decide which university to apply to.

Food, Accommodation, NightLife - Student Speak: Roshan Bhobe from Mumbai, pursuing his Masters in chemical engineering from the University of Bonn, speaks on everything you need to know besides education in Germany! Job: "I found my first job via a friend's contact. It's always beneficial to make friends and do a little bit of networking. The student council in the university is also beneficial. But when doing all your jobs, you also have to watch out that you don't neglect your studies." Food: "Germany offers each and every Indian spice, pickles, etc., that you need for cooking a sumptuous meal. And since we only work part-time, it doesn't get burdensome."

Fun and NightLife: "Football matches are a must-do on weekends. Moreover, we go for salsa and merengue till late in the night on long weekends, in the hall of residence, to take a break from studies. In fact, the city magazine contains an extensive catalogue of events with a diary and tips on going out."

Discounts: "At times when you don't have much to spend and are in deep need of discounts, the student ID card is useful because it helps you in bargaining. With a bit of luck, I sometimes get one of the cheap student tickets for 8 to 10 euros for the concert hall."

Don't Miss The major intake of students takes place during the winter session, which starts in October. You need to apply latest by Feb for admission sought in October. Your mark sheets and certificates, CV, IELTS or TOEFL score, Statement of Purpose (SOP), work experience certificates, if any, are required. GRE or GMAT scores only if applicable. Check with the university, as different universities have different test requirements.
